Tilapia: the chicken of aquaculture...

tilapia nilotica and an hybrid, the red tilapia

The tilapia (Oreochromis & Tilapia sp.) is a freshwater fish which is cultivate now everywhere in the world and also in Ecuadorr.

tilapia female incubating her eggs in the mouth It's a very robust and prolific fish. They are oral incubators; the females keep their eggs in mouth after the fertilization and later, the fry hides in it in case of danger.the international demand for tilapia is raising steadily

The breeding of tilapia has been first a rural pisciculture to produce cheap animal proteins for local populations of the developping countries but now this fish have much more demand on the international market.

To prevent the reproduction of the tilapias during the grow-out, only the males should be raised. The sex reversion is a technique which makes possible to produce monosexual populations of only males.

The differents stages of the tilapia production are: reproduction, harvest of the fry, sex reversion and the grow-out. The tilapia can be raised in low density, in polyculture with other species or in super-intensive with very high density, aireation and water renewal.the tilapia can be adapted to different culture systems

In the same way that poultry farming, there is a large variety of genetic lines of tilapia which allow to raise the fish best adapted to your environment.tilapia harvest
