Redclaw: a new candidate for tropical aquaculture!!

male adult redclaw

The redclaw (Cherax quadricarinatus) is a tropical freshwater crayfish very rustic and relatively easy to raise.

The redclaw is native of Australia and spends the dry period in very little water. This explain its very great resistance to the quality water fluctuations.

female redclaw with her eggs A great advantage of the redclaw is its natural reproduction in pond and its easy way to harvest. It can be transported alive out of water during more than 72 hours!

The redclaw is raised in earthern ponds. The diferents stages are the reproduction, nursery and grow-out. It's necesary to regularly classify according to the size and the sex to obtain good results of growth and production.

This crayfish grows quickly and can reach sizes of more than 200 grams. It can be stocked at high density without important diseases problems.

As it is a new species on the seafood market, it's still difficult to sell it on the international market. On the other hand, the redclaw is a product very easy to sell on the local market because it can be easily distributed alive with a high value.

The redclaw is also a splendid shellfish for the aquarist market.
