Domesticated species. All the biological cycle (reproduction, larviculture, grow-out) must be known and must be able to be carried out in captivity.

Fast growth. It is necessary that the selected species can reach a commercial size quickly and in a profitable way.

Resistance to diseases. It must be possible to control the pathologies which can commercially affect the culture .

Simple nutrition. The nutritional requirements of the selected species must be simple and inexpensive.

Interesting market. It is very important that the selected species is well accepted on the market.

Suitable technology. The farming techniques must be sufficiently developed and accessible to be able to produce the selected species in a commercial way.

Farming of aquatic species can be done in a multitude of way: in ponds, cement tanks, cages, with artificial diet, aerators...

For example, differents kinds of ponds are used for differents goals: 1) large earthern ponds for the catfish culture in the United States or for the shrimp farming in Ecuador 2) cement tanks for the intensive pisciculture of tilapia in Belgium 3) cages for the salmon farming in Chile.
